.

The term ‘Atmabiswas’ is composed of two different Bengali words; one - Atma means self and another - Biswas means confidence/courage. The comprehensive meaning of Atmabiswas denotes self-confidence/courage that also replicates the core working philosophy of the organization. Atmabiswas was instigated in January, 1991 by a group of dedicated individuals at Village and P/O: Alukdia, Upazila and District: Chuadanga, Bangladesh as non-government, voluntary and development organization without having any particular political or religious affiliation.
At the initial phase, some sorts of charity works were done by cross-cutting the issues of disability rights, women empowerment, hygienic sanitation, safe water and early marriage prevention with the support of six unpaid volunteers. Afterward, 31 branch offices were set up in order to carry out the programme extended significantly. In May, 2005, head office of Atmabiswas was shifted from Alukdia to the Biswas Tower, Cinema Hall Para, Chuadanga with a view to guiding all of its programmes competently. The founding objectives of the organization are to undertake initiatives for supporting the disadvantaged people of the society with the aim of contributing towards efforts for ending pervasive poverty, ecological degradation, gender inequality and injustice at the local and national levels.
Following a holistic development approach, the organization is now working on multi – dimensional issues of development including human rights, HIV/AIDS, child and women trafficking, education, violence against women, good governance, entrepreneurship development, mother and child health care, farmers’ rights and so on. The ideas, actions and philosophy of the organization focus on sustainable development through advocacy, training, campaign and livelihood support programs.
